چکیده

In Japan the lamprey, Entosphenus japonicus Martens, has often been recom mended since old times as a diet efficacious for curing night blindness and tuber culosis because of its rich source of nourishment. Fujimaki (1), Miura (2) and Nakamiya (3), reported the nutritive factors in the lamprey on different occasions and maintained that the vitamin A content of its flesh is several times as much as that of fresh butter or oil of the eel. Based on the works carried out by the authors in regard to the biochemical significance and variabiltiy of vitamin A in fish of different species, it can be said that the lamprey is a very unusual fish in various vitaminological aspects. The present paper deals with the results of the experiments conducted with the samples caught in the Mogami River, Yamagata Prefecture, in various seasons during 1951 to 1956.

A Noninvasive Tool to Assess the Distribution of Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) in the Columbia River Basin

The Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) is an anadromous fish once abundant throughout coastal basins of western North America that has suffered dramatic declines in the last century due primarily to human activities. Here, we describe the development of an environmental DNA (eDNA) assay to detect Pacific lamprey in the Columbia River basin. The eDNA assay successfully amplified tissue de...

Embryonic development of the Pacific lamprey, Entosphenus tridentatus.

Embryonic development of the Pacific lamprey, Entosphenus tridentatus, from Japan is described. Egg sizes averaged 1.249 mm (longest axis) and 1.145 mm (shortest axis), the time required for hatching being 11 days at 18 degrees C, shorter than previously reported for a lower water temperature (19 days at 15 degrees C). Early development in E. tridentatus proceeded at a similar rate to that in o...

A putative corticosteroid hormone in Pacific lamprey, Entosphenus tridentatus.

Great efforts have been put forth to elucidate the mechanisms of the stress response in vertebrates and demonstrate the conserved response across different vertebrate groups, ranging from similarities in the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to the release and role of corticosteroids. There is however, still very little known about stress physiology in the Pacific lamprey (E...

Reconnaissance of contaminants in larval Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) tissues and habitats in the Columbia River Basin, Oregon and Washington, USA.

Pacific lampreys (Entosphenus tridentatus) have resided in the Columbia River Basin for millennia and have great ecological and cultural importance. The role of habitat contamination in the recent decline of the species has rarely been studied and was the main objective of this effort. A wide range of contaminants (115 analytes) was measured in sediments and tissues at 27 sites across a large g...

Distribution and seasonal differences in Pacific Lamprey and Lampetra spp eDNA across 18 Puget Sound watersheds

Lampreys have a worldwide distribution, are functionally important to ecological communities and serve significant roles in many cultures. In Pacific coast drainages of North America, lamprey populations have suffered large declines. However, lamprey population status and trends within many areas of this region are unknown and such information is needed for advancing conservation goals. We deve...
